how to fight the flu

The temperatures are dropping and it seems like everyone around you is sick - what to do? Even if your throat feels dry and your nose is runny, there’s still a way to turn it around.
I’m one of those people who get sick very easily when exposed to temperature changes, stress and even an AC that’s set for a colder air temperature. But with these methods i’m about to share with you I almost always turn it around and recover before the flu even gets started. Note that I’m by no means an expert, I am simply sharing what works for me!

Prevention

You’ve probably heard this all before but it’s still very important to remember. 8+ hours of sleep, a balanced plant-based diet and excersize keeps your immune system strong and healthy. During the colder months it’s especially important to make sure your food is nutritious, and avoid inflammatory foods such as dairy, red meats and sugar.

vitamins

Vitamin C, D, B12 and zinc are my go-to’s when I feel like I’m coming down with something. Fresh juices are a great way of getting in vitamins naturally. Carrot, orange and ginger is one of my favorite combinations. Also a green juice with made with spinach, lemon and herbs can be great for your iron levels!

Extracts

I’ve been using Echinacea to treat my starting flu’s for a few years now. It’s my absolute favorite since I’ve seen it work a million times. I’ve recommended this to probably a zillion people and a few of my friends are now equally obsessed with it. Note, Echinacea is best used temporarily for short periods of time so your body doesn’t become immune to it.
Common yarrow is a new friend of mi ne, another potion that has really helped with my energy levels. Test a few different ones and find your favorite!

Mindset

Everyone knows that the mind and body work together, in symbiosis. It’s equally important to take care of your mental wellbeing, as your physical wellbeing. If you’re feeling stressed, tired or depressed it makes you more likely to get sick. So take care of yourself. Meditate, write a journal or just go outside and feel the nature. Find ways to ground yourself and remember to stop and be in the moment. If you’re already sick, try a gentle visualization of your cells working together, fighting the inflammation in your body. Or listen to some uplifting music and write down things you’re grateful for. Just get those endorphins flowing and you’re guaranteed to feel better.

The festival season is here - and we are ready.

This look is all-natural, gorgeous and unique, perfect for any occasion where you want to be just a little bit extra.
Start with a glowy and well moisturized face, brush out your brows and curl your lashes -your base is ready. 

The key product

here is Babe Balm by BYBI beauty. This product is designed to be an organic alternative to the well known 8 hour cream. It's rich, thick and extremely moisturizing. 
Apply the balm on your cheekbones, lips and eyelids to get an even glow. Then apply a second, thicker layer to those places where you want to put the flowers.

I'm using Violets. Their delicate leaves are perfect for this!
Choose your flower and remove the hard stem. The petals might start to separate but try to keep them together and use tweezers if needed.
Place the flower on top of the balm and press lightly so the petals are attatched to your skin. Gently go through the petals with your fingers to make sure they're all evenly coated with the balm and rearrange them if needed. Polish the look with face mist and you're good to go!
Note: You'll have to be a bit careful with this as we are not using glue. The flowers will stay in place if they're "wet" enough and you don't touch them. You might want to keep a pocket mirror with you in case you need to do some touch ups during the day!

The summer is here and it's time to get a tan! The dangers of sun are now very well known through things such as skin cancer and premature aging, but is there a way to tan safely? 
Here's some of our favorite tips for safe tanning! 

1.sunscreen

Traditional sunscreen can often be filled with harmful chemicals, but having no protection is not a smart choice either. Opt for a more natural option, they are safer for the environment as well. I've recently discovered the Finnish brand Atopik that makes natural sun-products for sensitive skin. They have a SPF 30 spray for the face and body that contains oil from oats, a highly nurturing oil that soothes the skin. 

2. Limit your time in direct sunlight

We've all been there, spending hours at the beach on your first day of vacation and looking like a tomato the next day. If your skin is not used to strong sun exposure start slow, tan for shorter periods of time and see how your skin reacts, and work from there. Caution is worth it, since sunburns increase your chance of getting skin-related issues later on.

3.self-tan

Self-tanning is an easy way to avoid any sun damage and still look fab. Atopik also has a gradually tanning lotion that's all natural and due to the gradual effect you can get exactly the right tone that you're looking for. The lotion is very moisturizing and feels amazing on the skin! I also love that it doesn't have that strong smell that usually comes with traditional self-tanners. 

4.beta-carotene

Beta-carotene can help you achieve a more healthy, warm-toned hue to your skin. You can get it from carrots, sweet potatoes and some other vegetables but if you're looking to see results fast you can add a supplement to your diet for an extra kick!

 Easy vegan hair mask DIY

With spring in the air, I thought it would be perfect to dedicate an afternoon for self-care and treating myself. Spring is a very symbolic time of a new beginning and inspiration for me, and I feel like treating myself goes hand-in hand with renewing myself. I love this mask because I pretty much always have avocado and banana on hand, there's no package waste and it does some serious damage control. As most oil-treatments, you probably don't want to do this the night before a big event. The avocado and coconut oil might be a little tricky to get completely out and you should shampoo two times after using this. But it's all worth it, trust me. This mask is packed with potassium and vitamins which will nurture and revitalize your hair, naturally. 

 

Mix in a blender:

1/2 avodaco

1/2 banana

few tablespoons of melted coconut butter

 

Apply the mask to the mid-part and ends of your hair. Let it sit for about 20 minutes and shampoo twice just to make sure!

 DIY turmeric and oat face mask

Turmeric is a staple ingredient in my kitchen cabinet for many reasons. First of all, its unique taste and vibrant colour brings any dish to life. Besides this it also has numerous health benefits while ingested, and used externally. It’s highly anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and detoxifying. For me, a turmeric latte is a life-saver whenever I feel like my body needs a little kick in the immune system. Plus it’s freaking delicious, I like to use a blend by Viridian that has cinnamon, chilli, vanilla and cardamom.

I recently discovered the benefits of turmeric for the skin, when used externally. Turmeric can help slow down cell damage and it evens out any colour pigmentations. Combined with the soothing and anti-inflammatory qualities of oats, it’s a perfect match for anyone who suffers from skin conditions such as acne, eczema or dry skin. I used this while traveling for my sunburned face, and it worked like a charm. -Stay protected!

Mix 1dl of oats, 1 teaspoon of high quality turmeric
and enough water to reach a desired consistency.
Voíla, there you go!

Ps. Don’t sleep on a white pillowcase after this mask like I did.

tracking your cycle

For us women, It’s extremely helpful to know our cycle inside out and see the bigger picture behind our fertility. Our reproductive system is very complicated and not many of us actually know the specifics of what goes on in our body every month.  I recommend reading the “holy bible” of the female reproductive system, “Taking charge of your fertility” by Toni Weschler to all women. This book has taught me so much. Even if you're not planning on tracking your cycle, it's a huge advantage to be able to understand your body on a deeper level.

By tracking your cycle you can find a whole new world of the female body and see which days you have a chance of getting pregnant and which days you’re safe. So you can use this method to avoid getting pregnant, or to help you get pregnant! And by ‘tracking’ I mean measuring your temperature every day just after waking up and writing it down. I use NaturalCycles because it’s an app that I have on my phone wherever I go. It uses an algorithm that tells me when I’m ovulating, when I have “green days” and it predicts my cycle months ahead. It’s also the first and only certified contraceptive app and a lifesaver to women who don’t want to use hormonal birth control. 

Now, keep in mind that this is a natural method and requires patience, maturity and understanding your body. There is so much to learn about our reproductive system as women and it’s a privilege to be able to understand exactly what goes on in your body each month. You can easily educate yourself online. Read into it, get involved and thank me later! Remember that this method does not protect against STD's.

 DIY matcha face mask

I'm drinking the foamy matcha latte at my local coffee shop. The foam fills my desires and all my senses are on fire. I can feel how my cells are loving the cup of magic. I walk home through the snowy streets. I strip the layers of clothing on me and wrap my morning robe on. I put my hair up and spalsh water on my face. I paint my face with the cup of magic. I can smell the matcha latte on my face. I can feel how she renews my skin, renews me. 

 

Matcha latte facial

Ingredients 

1 tsp clay

1/2 tsp matcha 

1 drop jasmine essential oil

couple drops of h20, or until perfect consistency (crystal infused h20 for extra magic) 

HOW

Mix all the ingredients together and brush it on your face, neck and chest. Let it sit until it's dried or up to an hour. Wash it off and massage a natural moisturiser on your face, neck and chest.

 DIY green tea and clay mask

Valentine's day is a reminder of how much love there is to give to ourselves, but love is such a broad concept. I see love as energy. The most highest form of energy. It's the Devine healing energy, and we all have access to it. To feel love and to live your biggest dreams, you've got to make an active choice daily to fill yourself with love. Because if you can't love yourself, neither can anyone else. So fill yourself with self loving thoughts, compliments and know that you're worthy of all that you wish for. 

 

There's many ways of self loving and here's one of them

 

you need :

  • couple of organic green tea leaves/bags 
  • 1 tsp of clay (I used activated green clay, but any natural clay will do)

HOW:

Mix the clay with just a couple drops of water until the paste is just right for you. Spread the clay all over your face and also to your neck and chest area for extra loving. For the green tea leaves, either use once enjoyed tea or wet the leaves, so they stick under your eyes. Let the facial sit until it's dry or until you've finished watching that episode of sex and the city and eaten your raw chocolate dessert. If your skin in prone to dryness treat her with good natural oil moisturiser or go with bare skin, if that's what your skin loves more.

I love all facials, but clay is definitely my favourite. I feel like it works its magic in whatever situation it's given to. Clay itself is sourced from the mineral rich earth so it carries these wonderful skin boosters when applied to our skin. Clay gives your skin a detox from the stress it goes through in our daily lives. Using clay is a huge loving act towards yourself.

 DIY zero waste body scrub

The exfoliating microbeads in most commercial scrubs are made of plastic. Yes you read that right. Plastic. This plastic, often referred to as “microplastic” ends up in our oceans, causing huge complications in our natural eco system. These easy scrubs will make you squeaky clean without any of the harmful chemicals or microplastics.

  • Coconut oil
  • + vanilla essence (optional)

The most simple recipe, yet super efficient and moisturising at the same time. You can make bigger batches of this, but the shelf life of the mask is not very long due to the natural ingredients. I usually just make it as i go. Make sure you rinse properly, so you get all the coffee grinds off your skin.

TURMERIC CAPSULES 

Turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory superfood that is perfect for treating any inflammation in your body. Sunburns and upset belly, for example!

ASHWAGHANDHA

Ashwagandha has numerous health benefits and is known for helping with balance and reducing stress when the external conditions change. It also strenghtens your immune system after illness, and as a nice plus it also increases your sex drive.

VALERIAN ROOT

Valerian root is a herb used to help with calming down and sleeping better. If you’re suffering from jet lag, valerian root is a safe and holistic alternative to sleeping pills. + a little tip for all my ladies out there, valerian can also help with period cramps with it’s soothing and relaxing properties.

GREEN POWER

To support your immune system, nutrients are crucial when traveling. I always have green superfood capsules with me so I can rely on them if i feel like i haven’t got gotten enough nutrients from my food.

is crucial for anyone with a vegan or vegetarian diet, and it shouldn’t be neglected while traveling.

Probiotics

Protect your gut flora by popping probiotics before and during your journey. Depending on where you’re going, the local bacteria can either seriously upset your stomach or not have any effect at all, but it’s safer not to risk it so you can enjoy your holiday with a peaceful mind.

1. Take time for yourself

We all have busy lives at times, and it’s totally fine if you can’t take an extra hour for yourself every morning. But having that one extra hour really makes a difference in your mood and productivity for the day, even if you only do it occasionally.

2. Stay offline

Allow yourself to wake up slowly without any distractions from social media. Let your mind wander and make the choice to have a good day. Try to avoid using social media for one hour after waking up. Checking your social media first thing in the morning gives your brain an endorphin rush, basically reward for doing nothing. This will lower your motivation to get things done during the day since you’ve already started your day with a reward.  

3. Ground yourself

Grounding yourself is key to having a productive day. Whether it be yoga, meditating, sun gazing, getting in touch with nature or all of the above, being in the moment allows you to listen to your true intuition and set the tone for the day. 

4. Cleanse & moisturize

Your skin is the largest organ in your body. Pampering yourself and giving your skin some well-needed attention gives your subconscious mind a signal of self-love and self-worth. Use products that are made from high-quality natural ingredients, and don’t feel bad if you can’t always DIY.  There are plenty of gorgeous organic cosmetic brands out there, like Jurlique for example. How to keep this skin of mine happy, is something most of us wonder about every now and then. I bet everyone has those days when they just feel like their skin is only letting them down (and of course it always happens at just that one moment when it's most inconvenient. You know what I mean?)

Actually there's no magic trick to how to let your skin glow. It's just about a combination of simple every day things and a potion of patience along the side (as we have our moody days, we should allow or skin to have them too. Only every now and then though, obviously)

Here we've gathered the 5 most basic tricks your skin will love + 1 to help you out on those moody face days. 

1. Sun

Here in Finland we only get very little sunlight during the darker seasons, and almost all of us suffer from low vitamin D-levels. So every time there's a bright sunny day, you bet I'm outside with a bare face trying to catch all those rays. Remember to stay protected with a non-toxic sunscreen if the sunrays feel strong. And if you feel like you're not getting enough sun, remember to pop those vegan d-vitamin supplements into your diet! 

2. Sleep

It's crucial for our wellbeing to get enough sleep. The quality of your sleep counts just as much, so it's very important to have a stress-free zone, where you can sleep peacefully. Remember to change your sheets, and especially the pillowcase on a regular basis to prevent any bacteria touching your skin. 

3. Water

Try to get in 1-2 litres of water every day. Starting your mornings with a cup of hot lemon water is a good way to hydrate yourself, without shocking your body with cold water first thing in the morning. For the rest of the day, try to carry a water bottle around that is easy to refill when on the go. Play around and infuse your water with berries, fruits and herbs.

4. Beauty Products

Find the products that work for you and stick to them. I highly recommend using natural and organic cosmetics, that only include safe ingredients. Some of the chemicals that are allowed in non-natural products are very harmful for us. I've found Mossa and Mia Höytö's products work like a wonder for me. 

5. Food

The food you put in your body is literally the fuel of your life. It's important to find a balance that works for YOU. I find my body works best if my meals are balanced of whole foods. I'm not saying you can't ever treat yourself, (because I often do) but opting for a healthier treat like a piece of rawcake or some air-popped popcorn instead of chips is the best way to indulge, especially for your skin. Also having a vegan diet has been known to help with skin issues. I highly recommend staying away from all animal products, but especially dairy is known for it’s connections with for example acne. 

+ 6. Tea Tree Oil

This one is your saver in those situations when your skin decides to challenge you. For breakouts, tea tree oil is a true wonder. It’s a powerful antibacterial essential oil that I've found works well on blemishes and scarring. You can apply it directly onto your skin, you'll only need a little so a tiny bottle will actually last you for quite a while.

 DIY Aloe Vera kasvonaamio

Aloe vera, or as the Egyptians called it ''the plant of immortality'', is known for its soothing and healing properties.

Aloe vera contains hormones called Auxin and Gibberellins, which provide both anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties. It’s also packed with vitamins and minerals, and the list of health benefits seem to be endless.

My skin always feels instantly refreshed and smooth after using this mask. I love the acidity from the lemon as it’s very cleansing, and combined with the soothing properties of aloe vera it's the perfect blend.

I simply blended the aloe jelly from 3 aloe leaves with the juice of one lemon in a blender. This mixture should last in the fridge for a week, so you don't have to use it all in one go.

I was lucky enough to do this while I stayed in Menorca, where Aloe Vera grows naturally, and lemon trees are found in every backyard. However if your surroundings are more like ours in Finland and Aloe Vera doesn't grow wild out there, you can also use an aloe vera room plant. just make sure it’s the right species for skincare! Take care of your plant and you'll soon have an endless supply of Aloe Vera jelly. Sounds pretty good, huh?
